The Importance of 2Spirit Community Building
SiMS is dedicated to creating and maintaining a safe and supportive social environment for 2 Spirit people. We believe that through community-building efforts, we can equip our community members with the tools they need to thrive within our society. Over the last year we have been working to build capacity within our organization so that we can better align ourselves with the vision and mission of 2SiMS. We created councils and committees, such as the Youth Council, Elder's Spiritual Advisory Council, and the Executive Directors' Committee, to guide our decision-making process. We also made it a priority to establish organizational partnerships that would allow us to create a stronger network of 2 Spirit peoples from coast to coast. Within the intersection of Indigenous and 2SLGBTQ+, there is a lot of marginalization and discrimination that can happen to folks. That's why it's essential for us to create strong communities where everyone can feel supported.

Small Rural and Remote Caucus (FR/ENG/ASL)

The Rural & Remote Collective was created in an effort to highlight and support the important work of rural & remote Pride organizations.
In rural & remote areas, Pride organizations often have to take on many roles to serve their communities in the face of growing challenges and limited resources - yet the essence of Pride shines just as bright.
At the 2023 FCP Conference & AGM, members of the Rural & Remote Collective will connect in-person to share experiences, discuss challenges and propose solutions to the unique challenges of running a Pride in a rural and/or remote setting.

2Spirit/Indigenous LGBTQ+ Pride Events in Canada (FR/ENG/ASL)
2Spirit people have been participating in Pride events and marches in Canada dating back to the early 1980's. The Nichiwakan Native Gay Society participated in Winnipeg's inaugural Pride March in August 1987, and the 2Spirited People of the 1st Nations organization has participated in Toronto Pride marches for decades as does the Greater Vancouver Native Cultural Society in Vancouver. This workshop will provide a historical overview of the 2Spirit resurgence in North America and its engagement with the mainstream LGBTQ community, specifically through various 2Spirit Pride events and march contingents. These contributions to Pride will be explored in urban, rural, on-reserve, northern and remote contexts. The impact of FCP's 2Spirit Council will also be discussed.

GenderSense - a decolonial, sensory exploration of gender.
Incorporating the use of various African, Asian and American Indigenous worldviews, technologies, symbols and systems, this workshop approaches the practice of gender exploration from a body-based, decolonial perspective. This highly interactive and collaborative session will dive into the elemental (water, earth, air, fire) and sense-based (touch, sound, sight, smell, taste) experience(s) of gender(s) by decentering the use of colonial languages' terms and expressions that anyway serve as ill-fitting tools to describe that which is, in many non-European cultures, essentially a state of spirit and a state of body. With such an approach, we begin to understand gender as an embodied spectrum of sensory experiences that are inherently occurring and positioned within the natural world. Through this practice, participants will be invited and encouraged to reclaim the eros of their own sense of gender(s), leaning into what Audre Lorde elucidated about the power of the Erotic as an incredibly potent and self-sustaining source of deep wisdom, knowledge and joy - that which is felt, sensed and enjoyed rather than cognized and rationalised. At the same time, this practice will serve to highlight cross-cultural similarities (Spoiler Alert: we are more connected than we think/know!) and will serve to reinforce bonds of sibling solidarity outside of the confines of linear notions of space and time that divide and separate us. "...Recognizing the power of the erotic within our lives can give us the energy to pursue genuine change within our world..." A. Lorde

**As a pre-workshop 'assignment', participants are invited to explore, envision what color(s) might represent their gender(s) and to bring items of that/those colors to the event.

//

» A. Lorde

Intro to Voguing with Van Vogue Jam (FR/ENG/ASL)
Long before voguing made it into mainstream pop culture in the 1990s, vogue was (and still is) an integral part of ballroom culture.
Vogue is a highly stylized freestyle dance born from house music and the queer clubs of Harlem, New York in the late 1980s. It is a camp style of dance that presents gender as a performance where dancers embody the spirit of extravagance in a way that is purposefully exaggerated and artificial.

Learn about the history of ballroom and the 5 elements of vogue with Van Vogue Jam!

Small but valid - how we amplified our northern rural voices! //
In 2020 Fierté Timmins Pride was successful in accessing funding through the federal government's WAGE grant. Within this workshop, we will discuss how funding was used to conduct a Needs Assessment that will be used to direct the development of programs and services to better serve the 2SLGBTQ+ community in North-Eastern Ontario using an intersectional approach to service provision that includes race, age, and language as valid and inclusive components to advance 2SLGBTQ+ equality.

The funding included the development of a Next Steps plan which identified the need for a community-engaged Steering Committee, comprised of various community partners in the health, education, and social service sector that has been working diligently to support Fierté Timmins Pride in its advocacy to the government for core funding that will allow for the sustainable advancement of 2SLGBTQ+ equality in our area. In our continued search for project funding to bridge the gap FTP is continuing to work on capacity building within our board including a multi-year Strategic Plan and the development of Peer Support Circles and Executive and Peer Support training.

We are happy to share the key findings from our Needs Assessment as they may resonate with other smaller prides in the country and how we have been moving the work forward in rural regions.

In the world of events, we are responsible for our invitees. More importantly, with Pride events, we are stewards of our community. While this is evidently important, it is not always clear how to get started - especially when your event is bringing a large population into an area or situated in somewhere that isn't fully adapted for your invitees/community or that the organizers are not familiar with.

The need to take ownership of safety within our Pride organizations has become ever more pronounced following recent events.

We will discuss some case studies and methods to developing a safety & wellbeing plan and team in the context of setting up an event such as Pride that serves its community in the process of running an event.

//

The spokes of our community - our people, our allies, our 2SLGBTQIA+ serving and affirming organizations - all touch on the hub that is Pride once a year. When we're able to harness that power and keep that community connection throughout the year, we can build a robust volunteer base that not only stays engaged 365 days a year, but builds power for social justice.
This short presentation and roundtable discussion will cover the Pride movement's role within the broader intersectional social justice movement (the "why" of staying engaged throughout the year) and examples of how Pride organizations can build scalable models of year-round engagement (the "how"). Attendees will leave with resources and strategies to build community-led and justice-centered programming, events, and messaging that works for your home Pride.

Developing educational content for 2SLGBTQ+ audience: How do we ensure diversity, inclusivity and accessibility practices throughout // (FR/ENG/ASL)
In this interactive workshop, we will brainstorm ideas on how to (and how not to) design and implement education content targeted for 2SLGBTQ+ communities. The workshop's goals are: to explore effective planning and process guidelines; how to meaningfully engage diversity and inclusion frameworks within content creation; and lastly, to share how accessibility practices can be implemented when creating educational modules that best meets the needs of 2SLGBTQ+ communities. The content for this workshop is based on our ongoing work for the Health Canada funded sexual and reproductive health project called Queering the Compass at Community-Based Research Centre (CBRC). We will bring our learned lessons from this project and hold space for collective knowledge to emerge, thereby guiding us to have a robust toolkit that folks can take and implement in their own work.

Promoting Health & Well-Being in GBQ Men & Gender Diverse (GD) Communities // Promouvoir la santé des hommes gai, bi, queer et des communautés diverses sur le plan du genre
Gay, bi, queer men and gender diverse (GBQ and GD) people in Canada face several barriers to accessing culturally safe, stigma-free health services and resources particularly in rural and remote regions. (Federal LGBT2Q Health Study HESA)

Community based organizations like Health Initiative for Men (HIM) exist across the country and facilitate access to things like testing, prevention education, harm reduction, and mental health services, created by and for communities we work with. However, these organizations often rely on partnerships with other organizations like local Prides to help promote them.

During this workshop staff at HIM will provide community members, healthcare providers and organizations with the knowledge required to work with local health service organizations to incorporate health promotion and prevention into their events and activities to better meet the needs of GBQ and GD people.
//
